Scandalously, today, America's free roaming Spirits
are being politically and quickly removed by BLM (Bureau of Land
Management) from their legal home ranges, our public lands,
never to return home again. Yet, President Bush,
has commended BLM for their management of our public lands. President Bush signed a
2004 Thanksgiving bill that "guts" the 1971
Wild Horse Protection Act allowing America's wild
horses to be sent to auction/slaughter.

Wild mustangs living on "Public"
lands are being rounded up and sold at auctions to make make for grazing
sheep and cattle. The federal Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has
created a wild horses adoption program for these horses, where they are
sold only as pets, but evidence has emerged which suggests that in
actuality these mustangs are being purchased by brokers who sell them
overseas for human consumption. Conservation groups such as the
"Fund for Animals" are continuing to fight the BLM in court on this
issue, claiming the BLM's political influences cause it to be biased
towards the very animals it's designed to protect. Can obtain

"El Caballo: The Wild Horse of
North America" by High Plains Films.
El Caballo is a 54 minute 2001 video and a recent finalist at the
International Wildlife Film Festival which has appeared on various
networks world wide. Long considered an "exotic" species, wild horses
occupy a sort of borderland, caught between them mythology of their
origins and the reality of their plight today. This is the subject of a
new documentary, by Drury Gunn Carr and Doug Hawes-Davis. Known
for their hard-hitting documentary films, Killing Coyote, Carr and
Hawes-Davis approach wild horses with a lighter, albeit no less powerful
touch. The documentary opens like a Clint Eastwood film, with
horses galloping across the desert against the backdrop of a waning sun.
The film's basic tenet is that all equids, including horses, evolved in
North America and existed here until the end of the Pleistocene Epoch
8000 years ago, when they mysteriously disappeared. Therefore,
when the Spanish explorers arrived with horses in the early 1500s they
were essentially RE-introducing a NATIVE SPECIES." High Country
News The film does an impressive job of presenting, without preaching,
the challenges of Old West vs New West, open space vs fences, things
wild vs things domestic. El Caballo isn't a call to action.
It doesn't tell anyone what to think, and it doesn't stake out a high
ground or "right" way to manage. What it does is present a little-known
controversy, backed up with a diverse array of opinionated experts, and
package it with a eye-candy footage that never lets your eyelids say.
